Young people deserve valued routes into work

We want better, stable and more fulfilling jobs for our children. That starts with education and with giving young people clear, valued choices about their future.

We want better, stable and more fulfilling jobs for our children. That starts with education and with giving young people clear, valued choices about their future.

I did not go to university. My wife did, and both of us have fulfilling careers despite taking different routes. I wanted to start working, so I laboured on a building site, saved enough to start my own business and found my feet from there.

University is a brilliant path for many people. But alternatives have not always been clear enough or valued highly enough. Young people who choose another route should still leave education with the skills, experience and confidence to build a rewarding career.

That is why I support a stronger focus on vocational education and work experience. I want my own children, and every young person, to know that there are different routes into a fulfilling working life.
