School transport failures must not leave children waiting

Parents contacted me at the start of term after children with additional needs waited for school transport that never arrived.

Those first days of school matter enormously. For a child who relies on the council’s Home to School Transport service, an unexpected failure can turn an already anxious morning into a deeply upsetting experience.

In my statement, I raised the failure to renew a taxi contract and the effect on the children concerned. Council officers dealt with the issue as quickly as they could, but families should not have been put in that position.

I want the affected children and families to receive an apology, and I want safeguards to prevent this happening again. Reliable school transport is essential to children’s access to education.
