Preventing violence against women and girls

Through my role as Chair of the Community Safety Partnership Scrutiny Sub Panel, I have seen more clearly how pervasive violence against women and girls is, and how much more we need to do to prevent it.

We must confront the growing normalisation of misogyny and harmful ideas about masculinity, particularly among young men. These attitudes should not be dismissed as something happening only on the fringes.

Policing and prosecution matter. So do prevention, education and challenging the culture that allows abuse to take root.

I welcome a serious focus on this work and will keep pressing for community safety scrutiny that asks what is changing for the women and girls who need protection.
